The Madeleine McCann Research Group (MMRG) 50 "Facts" leaflet claims:

48. The McCanns have produced 16 different artists’ impressions of suspects, ‘persons of interest’ and ‘persons we wish to eliminate from our enquiries’. Yet despite their spending millions of pounds, we, the public, know nothing whatsoever about who is supposed to have abducted Madeleine.

Verdict - False and True.   Some sketches were produced after people contacted the McCanns and told them what they'd seen. Indeed the public doesn't know who has abducted Madeleine, neither do her parents. The man who was seen carrying a child that evening never came forward to identify himself.

Source - Newspapers, the Find Madeleine website and the Police Files.

Summary of Verifiable Facts

  1. A quick search shows that at least 5 of the e-fits aren't 'produced' by the McCanns but by the police;
  2. At the moment there are three 'Unidentified People of Interest to the Inquiry' mentioned on the Find Madeleine site;
  3. The public nor the McCanns know who has abducted Madeleine. But someone knows and may be someone holds vital information without knowing it.

Victoria Beckham 'lookalike' sought in Madeleine McCann case

This article was published on guardian.co.uk at 13.50 BST on Thursday 6 August 2009.

Quote.

The woman, said to have an Australian or New Zealand accent, was reportedly seen by two British men in Barcelona, Spain, days after Madeleine went missing in Praia da Luz shortly before her fourth birthday.

The woman said something to one of the men that has convinced investigators working for the McCanns that she could provide potentially significant information. An efit of the woman was released today at a London press conference by a family spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, and David Edgar, the retired detective who now leads the search for the girl.

Quote.

Mitchell said there had been many "well-meaning and malicious" tip-offs over the years since Madeleine disappeared and her parents were hoping this one might be significant. "They are searching for Madeleine with every breath they take. They will never give up until they know what happened to her."

  • These two pictures show a man carrying a child away from the family's apartment. This sighting was seen by a witness at 21:15 on the evening of Thursday, May 3rd, 2007.
  • The picture shows a man that was seen several times by different witnesses during the days leading up to Madeleine's abduction on May 3rd 2007. He was described as ugly with pock-marked skin and was said to be watching the family's apartment intently.
  • This is an e-fit picture of a woman aged 30-35 years, approx. 5ft 2" tall, who was behaving suspiciously in the area of the Port Olimpic Marina in Barcelonain the early hours of May 7th 2007. She is a person of interest to the inquiry - as yet, unidentified.

  • Iris Morgan statement 2008/01/17 "On Thursday 17 Jan 08, I was asked by the Police to complete a E-fit identification process, which I did."
  • Rex Morgan statement "Prior to recording this statement, I was asked by the police to complete a E FIT identification procedure. I do not recall that I could satisfactorily recall both of the persons features to complete an E FIT so I declined to do so."
  • Derek Flack statement 2007/05/06 "Urged to describe the man, the deponent said he was Caucasian, dark-skinned, medium stature, 1,70 to 1,75m tall, about 25 to 35 years old.

--- Adding that the man had dark and thick hair but with no noticeable fringe [at the front].
--- Regarding [the man's] apparel he adds that he didn't observe this in detail, judging that [the man] wore a plain T-shirt, possibly yellow."
--- Based on the above description image likeness [e-fit] #18/2007 is attached.

  • Lance R. Purser statement 2007/05/06 "Yesterday, the witness was asked by elements of the PJ to describe an individual he had seen two weeks ago.
The individual, whom he knows nothing more about, was seen on a few occasions in the Praia da Luz zone.
He states that it was an individual who appeared to be about 35/40 years of age, skinny, around 1,70 m in height, and wearing dark clothing (jean top and jeans). He had dark, straight hair, rather untidy which trailed down to his neck but could not be considered long.
The face is described as having a rustic appearance, dark-skinned and seemingly sun-tanned and he had dark eyes whose exact colour he cannot define."
The witness will be asked to comply with a photo-sketch exercise regarding the above mentioned individual.
  • T.M.S. statement 2007/05/09 "Concerning the individual, she describes him as being: Caucasian race, light skin, so he wasn't Portuguese, but could be British, according to her criteria. Approximately 180 cm tall, thin complexion, 30/35 years of age. Short hair, like shaved with 1 cm of length and fair, but she isn't sure if it was blonde because the sun was reflecting, and made perception more difficult. She didn't see the eyes because he wore dark glasses of black colour, with a structure of mass, a thick frame. He had a large forehead. Nose of normal size, a bit pointy and sharp. Large ears, close against the head. Mouth with thin lips, she didn't see his teeth. Chin pointing up, which stood out on a face that she describes as sharp. No beard, no moustache, a clean shave. No other special signs, apart from some small pimples on the face as a result of shaving. He looked ugly, even 'disgusting'."
She said that she can recognise the man both personally and photographically, and create a photofit.
  • Paul Gordon "I would describe the male as Portuguese looking, very tanned, medium build and about 5ft 7" to 5ft 10" tall. He looked between 40 and 45 years old and spoke really good English with a foreign accent. He had short dark black hair with possibly some grey around the sides. His hair was not perfectly straight and I would imagine that should he have grown it longer, then it would be wavy. He had no facial hair and I'm quite sure that he wasn't wearing glasses. He had a few wrinkles on his face and was quite presentable. He was wearing a light blue or green pale polo shirt with short sleeves. It was plain and had no logos or writing on it. I believe he was wearing light tan coloured trousers and dark brown shoes. I think they were slip - ons"

Compare MMRG statement with the actual FACTS

MMRG quote: The McCanns have produced 16 different artists’ impressions of suspects, ‘persons of interest’ and ‘persons we wish to eliminate from our enquiries’. Yet despite their spending millions of pounds, we, the public, know nothing whatsoever about who is supposed to have abducted Madeleine.

Actually: As you can see, most of the e-fits are made by the police and at their request. According to the Find Madeleine website, there are three "Unidentified People of Interest to the Inquiry".

It's not important that we, the public, don't know who has abducted Madeleine, what is important is that neither her parents nor the police or the private investigators know who is responsible for her disappearance. Maybe the review by New Scotland Yard will change that.

Mrs Justice Hogg at the High Court, Family Division, RCJ, London.

Quote.

I urge anyone who has any information however small or tenuous to come forward now so that further enquiries can be made.
There is, of course, as least one person who knows what has happened to Madeleine, and where she may be found.
I ponder about that person: whether that person has a heart and can understand what it must be like for Madeleine to have been torn and secreted from her parents and siblings whom she loves and felt secure with, and whom no doubt misses and grieves for. Whether that person has a conscience or any feeling of guilt, remorse or even cares about the hurt which has been caused to an innocent little girl: whether that person has a faith and belief, and what explanation or justification that person will give to God.
I entreat that person whoever and wherever you may be to show mercy and compassion, and come forward now to tell us where Madeleine is to be found.
I hope and pray that Madeleine will be found very soon alive and well.

People want to help, people do come forward wtih information in good faith. If it's a credible witness with significant information, an artists impression is made if a description can be given - it isn't known at this point whether THIS might be the witness whose statement will break the case.

It's very possible that some of this information (given in good faith) is not related to Madeleine's disappearance, but only investigation leading to evidence can prove this.

What is the MMRG suggesting the police and McCanns should have done with these descriptions? Limit the numbers? Discard some of them? How would they choose? How would the MMRG choose?
