Who is Pat Brown?

Pat Brown is an American Criminal Profiler.  She has also blogged extensively about the McCann case.  In the main, her blogs are critical of the McCanns and of Kate McCann in particular.  She describes the McCanns as narcissists.

Pat Brown's Theories on the McCann Case

In her blog she has offered theories on the following:-

  1. That the McCanns buried Madeleine's body for several weeks before digging it up and transporting it back to England - possibly in a rucksack
  2. Whether or not the last photograph of Madeleine was doctored (i.e. photoshopped)
  3. Various observations about the McCanns' behaviour and use of language
  4. Various observations about how the parents of a missing child should behave

However, by her own admission:-

Quote:

One has to be careful when analyzing from a distance if a particular person or persons is exhibiting guilt concerning the commission of a crime. Until there is hard physical evidence linking a perpetrator or perpetrators to a crime, the case is tried in court and a conviction is handed down by a jury or judge, all is still speculation

Question:

Is Pat Brown aware that there are people around the world who believe every word she says because of who and what she is?  Or is she oblivious to this as she appears to be about some of the very basic facts about the case?  (See Misinformation by Pat Brown section below)

On her blog, Pat Brown makes the following "disclaimer", yet this high-profile profiler does not hesitate to expound her theories to a world-wide audience:-

Quote:

As a criminal profiler, I have also sometimes been criticized for theorizing about a case I have not personally been privy to the actual facts from inside the investigation. As I do a lot of television commentary, this is quite often the case for me; I only can theorize based on the “facts” outlined by the media. Therein lays the difference between public speculating and true criminal profiling as part of an investigative team. The latter is going to be one hell of a lot more accurate!

Pat Brown on Misinformation

Interestingly, she applauds Heather McCartney for her stance against media misinformation which she describes as "abuse":-

Quote:-

I just saw Heather Mill's television interview on GMTV and I have to applaud her newest campaign. Heather is fed up with lies produced by the tabloids and is working to get laws in place to stop them from publishing outright lies and from displaying harassing behaviors equivalent to stalking. Rarely do I spend much time reading stuff from European tabloids but having a interest in the Madeleine McCann case led me to witness their brand of "reporting." I found myself rather stunned at the amount of stories that came out that included information completely contrary to stories from other tabloids or even from their own reporters just a day prior. If one story is the truth, a story with the opposite set of "facts" must then be a pack of lies. Apparently, the lies have gotten so out of control, the tabloids don't even fear lawsuit so they just print any inflammatory thing they want. This is egregious and I hope Heather succeeds in her campaign to stop this abuse.

One wonders how Ms Brown reconciles this with her own contribution to this misinformation (see below):-

About the Dogs

On 13 September 2007, Pat Brown blogged:-

Quote:

Apparently, the police never brought the sniffer dogs to the new villa and, therefore, Maddie’s body could have remained in a suitcase in a storage area until the McCanns decided to move on. If the decomposition stage was late enough, the issue of odor would be less of a problem).

In fact, the police took the sniffer dogs to the new villa on 2nd August 2007.  This was reported in the media.  The official documents including the search warrant can be found here.

About "Why does Kate McCann not make a Plea to Maddie's Captor?" UPDATED!

On Thursday, October 25, 2007, Pat Brown blogged the following

Quote:

Criminal Profiling Topic of the Day: Why Does Kate McCann not make a Plea to Maddie's Captor?

In the recent interview with the parents of Madeleine McCann, Kate McCann states she believes Madeleine is alive, essentially unharmed, and being cared for in someone's home. If Kate really believes this, then there is a glaring omission in her use of the media.  It is extremely abnormal for a mother who thinks her child has simply been taken by some lonely person and being cared for in a nice, little house to not reach out to that person with a message, over and over again. After all, this would be one way to get your child back. Here is how that kind of message usually goes:

“If you have Madeleine, please return her to her family. I know you may love having Madeleine with you but her Mommy, her Daddy, and her sister and brother are in great pain being separated from her. Please, please, let us have her back. Please take her to a public location where there are lots of people around like a McDonalds or a library or a hospital and drop her off. You can do this anonymously so you do not have to worry about being noticed. We are not interested in having any action taking against you; we just want our little girl at home with us. Thank you for taking good care of her and please send Madeleine back to us.”

But, instead, no plea to her captor? Very, very bizarre.

In fact, by the time Pat Brown wrote this blog entry, the McCanns had appealed directly to the abductors on at least FOUR occasions:-

First Direct Appeal - 4th May 2007

When Kate and Gerry McCann returned from the police station after giving their first witness statements, the media were gathered outside the Ocean Club.  They took this opportunity to make a direct appeal to the abductor or anyone with information about Madeleine:-

Quote:

Words cannot describe the anguish and despair that we are feeling as the parents of our beautiful daughter.  We request anyone wwho may have information relating to Madeleine’s disappearance, no matter how trivial, contact the Portuguese police and help us get her back safely.

Please if you have Madeleine, let her come home to her mummy, daddy, brother and sister.

As everyone can understand how distressing the current situation is, we ask that our privacy is respected to allow us to continue assisting the police in their investigation."

Second Direct Appeal - 7th May 2007

The second direct appeal was made on 7th May 2007 at 2pm.  It was relayed on TV and reported by newspapers worldwide.  The following quote which gives the full wording of the appeal here is from the BBC:-

Quote:

We would like to say a few words to the person who is with our Madeleine, or has been with Madeleine.

Madeleine is a beautiful, bright, funny and caring little girl. She is so special. Please, please, do not hurt her.  Please don't scare her.  Please tell us where to find her or put her in a place of safety and let ssomeone know where she is.

We beg you to let Madeleine come home. We need our Madeleine.  Sean and Amelie need Madeleine and Madeleine needs us.  Please give us our little girl back.

Por favor, devolva a nossa menina (which means "Please give our little girl back")

Third Direct Appeal - 4th July 2007

The third appeal was made on the two month "anniversary" of Madeleine's disappearance.  Once again it was reported by many newspapers.  This quote is taken from the Daily Mail on 4th July, 2007:-

Quote:

Madeleine's mother tells abductor: 'It's not too late to give her back'

By TOM KELLY
Last updated at 09:59 04 July 2007

The mother of missing Madeleine McCann has begged her daughter's abductor: "It's not too late - please give her back" as she marked two months without the four-year-old.

Kate McCann made the emotional appeal just a few yards from where the youngster was snatched from her bed in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz on May 3.

Fourth Direct Appeal  - 28th August 2007

Taken from Gerry McCann's blog on 28th August 2007:-

Quote:

Gerry McCann's blog Day 117

We, like everyone else, await the results of the forensics from the recent searches. We do not know who has taken Madeleine or why. Sometimes people do things for reasons that even they cannot understand. An act of madness, an accident or sudden impulse can lead to consequences that people may never have imagined or intended. Faced with such a situation we believe any human soul will ultimately suffer torment and feelings of guilt and fear.

If you have done something you regret, if you find yourself in a situation you never intended, it is not too late to do the right thing. Please come forward, return Madeleine, leave her in a place of safety. At the very least, help us by letting us know what has happened to our beautiful little girl.

UPDATED

On Wednesday 29th November, 2011, Pat Brown posted this on Twitter:-

The McCanns did make repeated appeals to the abductor.  However, Pat Brown's blog article blatantly accused the McCanns of NOT appealing to the abductor at all.

Pat Brown's article accusing the McCanns of not appealing to the abductor can be found here.

A blog article about this can be found here.

About the McCanns changing their story checking their children

Pat Brown firstly quoted Gerry McCann:-

Quote:

“We felt our actions were responsible. We were essentially performing our own baby listening service although we have talked of the guilt we felt at not being there at the moment Madeleine was taken.”

Then she speculated as to what this meant:-

Quote:

But, firstly, what Gerry admits in that statement is they were only “listening” at the door, not looking in to see if their children are all right. If they are not actually observing their children, they would not know if they were sick, injured, or missing from the room. Gerry has moved away from saying they actually checked on their children to some rather vague “listening” methodology, perhaps, one so distant, that he meant they were close enough that they should be able to hear one of the kids if they left the room screaming for them.

If Pat Brown had done a little homework, she would easily discover that a "baby listening service" is a service offered by many European hotels and apartment complexes.  A baby listening service involves someone, often a member of staff going round the hotel/complex and listening at the doors for sounds of a crying or wakeful child.  The parents are then contacted at an agreed location within the hotel/complex.  Gerry McCann is not changing his story.  He uses the baby listening service as an analogy for what they were doing.  Parents who use official hotel baby listening services are not considered to be neglecting their children and baby listening services are not illegal.

About the McCanns deciding to return to England when they were made Arguidos

Quote:

The McCanns left Portugal as soon as they became Aguidos. If the only reason they were made suspects was a legal one so the police could ask them important questions to help them clear themselves, they should have stayed to continue to help the police put the matter straight and get the focus off of them.

The McCanns started thinking about returning home in mid-July - two months after Madeleine went missing (page 222 of Kate McCann's book HB).  The lease expired on the rented villa on 11th September and they had to vacate it then (page 227).  The decision to return to England on 10th September 2007 was taken on 27th August 2007 - almost two weeks before they were made arguido.  On 8th September, they received word via the British Consul that they had been declared "free" to leave Portugal whenever they wished.

Pat Brown offering her services in the McCann Case - on either side

The following two quotes are from an "Open Letter to Kate McCann" written on 24th October, 2007

Suggesting the Portuguese Police might use her "services" (for free)

Quote:

I have a final suggestion. Ask the PJ if I can come analyze the case. My organization will send me pro bono. As a criminal profiler I can analyze the actual evidence to advise the investigators as to the best investigate strategy. I have no problem determining this crime as an abduction and finding the creep that took Madeleine if the evidence points that way. I don’t have to like you and Gerry as people to view the evidence in an impassionate and professional manner. No one should be convicted of a crime simply because of personality and because people don’t like the individual’s personality. Solid physical and circumstantial evidence must exist to the point where there is no question as to who committed the crime. I would work very diligently to assist the PJ with the evidence and the facts and do a thorough crime scene analysis that would move the case forward.

Suggesting the McCanns might use her "services"

The following was written after she wrote insultingly about the couple!:-

Quote:

Furthermore, if you and Gerry get charged in Madeleine’s disappearance and must truly defend yourselves, my services are available to you and your lawyers. I will be more than happy to analyze the evidence and, if you are innocent, do all I can to serve in your defense.

Other Comments by Pat Brown

Normal behaviour for the parents of an abducted child

Quote:

I am a criminal profiler with years of experience dealing with parents of murder victims and missing relatives. Your behavior and the behavior of your husband fall far outside or the norm for grieving parents.

Questions

  1. What is the behavioural "norm" for the parents of an abducted child?
  2. Is this a blanket "norm" which would be exhibited by all parents regardless of class, culture and the circumstances of their child's abduction?

Normal parental attempts to find a child who goes missing in a foreign country

Quote:

Your attempts at “finding” Madeleine do not represent the manner most parents would choose if they were actively searching for a live child but appear more to be the actions of parents trying to prove after the fact of a child’s death that they “cared” (not care) about her.

Questions

  1. How would "most parents" of children who go missing in a foreign country attempt to find their child?
  2. How many examples do we have to compare?

Who should the parents of an abducted child feel anger towards?

This is a particularly interesting comment from someone who has "years of experience in dealing with parents of murder victims and missing relatives" (i.e. the victims of crime):-

Quote

The McCanns are reaping what they sowed and there are responsible for the results of their actions. They only anger they should express is towards themselves, not the police or public trying to find out what happened to Maddy, and they only horror they should feel should be at their own actions and the horrible hurt it brought to their innocent little girl.

Questions

  1. Is it abnormal for the parents of a missing child to feel anger towards the person who stole and perhaps abused or murdered their child?
  2. Is it abnormal for the parents of a missing child to feel anger and frustration at the police who botched the investigation?

Polygraphs

Quote:

Neither Kate of Gerry have taken or indicate they will take a polygraph. Parents of missing children do this to clear themselves so the police will not waste time focusing on them.

Questions:

  1. Is Pat Brown genuinely unaware that polygraphs aren't used by Law Enforcement in Portugal or the UK?

  • Fact - The McCanns have never been asked by law enforcement to take a polygraph.  They were invited to take one administered by the polygrapher for a daytime entertainment programme and declined.  Their spokesman said that if LE asked them to take a polygraph, they would,
  •

    Kate McCann's sleep patterns

    Quote:

Kate states she had trouble sleeping during the first five days after Maddie went missing but has been sleeping fine since. Very few parents of abducted children can sleep very well knowing their child might be in pain, crying, and scared. Kate’s ability to sleep infers she is not worrying about Maddie because Maddie is dead already (or has an inability to feel empathy for others).

    Question:

    1. As the mother of three children under the age of four - one of whom has been abducted,  could Kate's ability to sleep after five nights without sleep, have anything to do with exhaustion?
    2. Is exhaustion a factor that a professional criminal profiler would take into consideration at all?

    Conclusion

Pat Brown has used her public presence to expound her opinions about the case and to criticise the McCanns.  Yet she is clearly ill-informed about some very basic facts in the case - facts which could be ascertained with very little effort.

Are the McCanns responsible for public opinion about them?

Pat Brown seems to think so:-

    Quote:

Before I comment further, I want to reiterate that the McCanns, while suspects in the disappearance of Maddie, are not legally charged with any crime. Therefore, they may be totally innocent of hurting Maddie in any way. But, I will also say, we as adults and members of the human race are also responsible for the way we behave and the things we say, so we must also take responsibility for the way other view us.

    Question:-

Even if the way people view us is tarnished by the constant stream of lies and misinformation which have been generated by the tabloid press and perpetuated on the Internet by people who should know better?  Is that the McCanns' responsibility too?

Is it right to for any professional to express an opinion when they admit that they "haven't really got a clue"?

Any conclusion on Pat Brown's misinformed and arguable hysterical opining about the McCann case is probably best summed up in her own words:-

    Quote:

To the McCann case; I don't have a clue as to the physical evidence  or timeline because of police silence and all the rumors. Therefore it is really hard to actually analyze how the crime went down. But, I will go ahead with what I generally think on the matter.
